Mental Healthcare for All Ages
Over 1 in 5 children in the U.S. struggle with mental health issues, yet sadly, only 20-25% receive support. At Ethos Wellness, we are committed to changing this statistic through specialized outpatient healing focused on empowering children, teens, and families.
As part of this mission, we provide an individual child dialectical behavior therapy (C-DBT) program tailored to equip children and adolescents with adolescent executive function skills, alongside essential coping and emotional regulation skills..
C-DBT at Ethos Wellness
Child (C-DBT) is an evidence-based adaptation of standard dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). It has proven effective for conditions like depression, anxiety, trauma, and emotional dysregulation in young people.
Through a collaborative approach between our compassionate therapists, parents, and children, we develop the foundations needed for happiness and resilience.
If your child is exhibiting emotional or behavioral issues, our individual C-DBT program may provide the support needed to thrive. Read on to learn more about this transformative treatment opportunity.
What is Child (C-DBT)?
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) has demonstrated exceptional outcomes across age groups for various mental health struggles. But, recognizing developmental differences, DBT was adapted to better meet the needs of children and teens.
Child DBT, or C-DBT, applies the core principles of standard DBT while accounting for the cognitive, emotional, and social growth occurring during childhood and adolescence.
Just like DBT for adults, C-DBT takes a skills-based approach, with the goal of enhancing:
- Emotional regulation
- Distress tolerance
- Interpersonal effectiveness
- Mindfulness
Conditions Treated With C-DBT
One-on-one sessions use developmentally-tailored methods like games, role-playing, arts, and crafts. This ensures children remain engaged while internalizing essential wellness skills. Above all, C-DBT emphasizes validation, meeting every child where they are with compassion.
Numerous studies validate C-DBT for conditions, including:
- Mood disorders
- Trauma
- Oppositional defiant disorder
- ADHD, and more
Outcomes include improved emotional control, healthy relationships, and an enhanced sense of purpose and self-worth.
Recognizing When a Child May Need Support
As a parent or guardian, you know your child better than anyone else. You may notice shifts in behavior or mood that signal potential mental health issues in a child that needs support.
Some common signs include:
- Difficulty regulating emotions like anger or sadness
- Increased irritability and sensitivity
- Avoidance of school or social situations
- Declining academic performance
- Changes in sleep patterns or appetite
- Engaging in risky or impulsive behavior
- Expressing hopeless feelings through words or actions
Catching these issues early and seeking treatment through C-DBT can prevent long-term impacts on health, relationships, and success. At Ethos Wellness, our goal is to provide children and families with the tools needed to find balance and joy.

The Benefits of Individual C-DBT
Individual C-DBT delivers life-long skills for navigating difficulties, building resilience, and unlocking potential.
Benefits include:
Benefits include:
- Improved emotion regulation: By learning to identify emotions and apply healthy coping strategies, children gain greater control over their moods and impulses. This leads to less emotional volatility and fewer negative behaviors.
- Healthier relationships: With interpersonal skills training, children relate better to peers, parents, and authority figures like teachers. This fosters a sense of belonging.
- Enhanced resilience: Learning mindfulness, distress tolerance, and problem-solving empowers children to handle life’s challenges with flexibility and grace.
- Reduced anxiety and depression: C-DBT’s evidence-based techniques alleviate factors contributing to internalizing disorders like anxiety and depression. Children become more confident and optimistic.
- Increased self efficacy: As children gain autonomy over their emotions and choices, their self-efficacy and confidence grows. This motivates them to keep progressing.
The downstream benefits of C-DBT include improved academic performance, brighter futures, and families strengthened through compassion and understanding.
Collaborative Care from Qualified C-DBT Therapists
Our therapists have extensive training and credentials in child psychology and behavior therapies. We pursue ongoing education to remain at the forefront of evidence-based care.
However, expertise extends beyond medical knowledge. We believe in truly knowing each child and family. Treatment plans are tailored to the unique needs and aspirations of every individual. Sessions involve both child and parent, so families feel empowered to support change.
We create an open, non-judgmental environment where children feel safe to share. Trust enables authentic connection and growth. Above all, we validate each child’s emotions and experiences with empathy.
What to Expect: The Individual
C-DBT Process
Our C-DBT program is highly-structured, with children attending 1-2 sessions per week ranging from 30 to 90 minutes, depending on age.
Parents are actively involved to reinforce skills at home. Sessions combine individual and family meetings. The duration of treatment varies based on need but generally lasts around 16 weeks.
Typical Structure of a Session
Each week follows a similar schedule, beginning with children checking in about skills practice and challenges faced. Next, the therapist introduces a new skill through interactive exercises.
Children then apply skills through activities like role-playing while receiving supportive feedback. Sessions close with planning for ongoing skill building at home.
We also provide care coordination with schools to promote positive behavior and academic support. Throughout the therapeutic process, we regularly assess progress and adjust treatment plans accordingly.
A Safe Space for Growth
With consistency and commitment, children in our C-DBT program begin showing improvement in just a few short weeks. We provide support for the journey ahead to help clients maintain emotional health.
