Dr. Marcos Modiano is a general psychiatrist and addiction medicine physician licensed in the state of Illinois. He attended the Anahuac University School of Medicine in Mexico and graduated first in his class as a Doctor of Medicine. While there, he realized his passion for the field of mental health and went on to obtain a master’s in psychoanalytical research before moving to Chicago, driven by their psychological model of the mind.

In Chicago, he completed his general psychiatric residency at Rush University, where he gained experience in psychodynamic psychotherapy. During his second and third years, he helped develop the Rush Addiction Medicine Program under the supervision of Dr. Gail Basch.

Upon finishing his residency, Dr. Modiano began working at St. Joseph Hospital, aiding with in-patient detox and outpatient treatment for substance use and serving as Medical Director for the professionals program, which treated impaired professionals struggling with substance use disorders such as doctors, nurses, pilots, first responders, lawyers and other high-functioning individuals. While at St. Joseph, he also maintained his own private practice, serving dual-diagnosis individuals with psychiatry and addiction medicine.

When asked what he enjoys most about his job, Dr. Modiano answers easily—his patients. He loves to see them heal, thrive and return to their daily lives, and he notes that addiction medicine is a field where he is lucky enough to see this often. He also has a special interest in LGBTQA mental health and inclusivity.

Outside of his professional life, Dr. Modiano spends time nurturing his own physical and mental health. He loves to run (he completed the Chicago Marathon five years in a row) as well as read, knit and spend time with his dog, a Bernedoodle with unlimited energy. Having grown up in a household where languages were encouraged, he speaks fluent Spanish and some Italian in addition to English.
